Throughout the recent history of Asian countries, the movements of the public who sought to raise their own voices against state power were repeatedly subjected to harsh suppression and human rights violations. The Formosa Incident in Taiwan, which opposed the military dictatorship, led to 39 years of media suppression and human rights violations, and the shadow of the Gwangju Uprising still casts a deep shadow over Korean history. In the summer of 2019, when the voices of citizens resonated in every corner of Hong Kong, the most capitalist city, a new US military base, the largest in Asia, was being constructed in Okinawa, where the scars of war still remain. The artist met and interviewed people in four Asian cities who had experienced unfair treatment from past governments. The artist proposed a 1 day trip to two people in each city and filmed videos with them. Among them, some lived with scars in their memories, while others lived with anger over past events that are easily forgotten. The 4 channel video filmed in Kaohsiung, Ginowan (Okinawa) Gwangju, and Hong Kong consists of interview footage captured while walking along the memories of the speakers across the cities. The artist collected and recorded various noises that could be heard in each city. Each video functions as an individual documentary, yet it also becomes a member of a quartet composed of noises. White terror was a means by which past military regimes suppressed opposing voices. The reason the artist attempted to create a concerto composed of noise is because the artist believed that the voices of the public, which could not be heard without listening closely in the midst of white terror, resemble white noise. The white terror and white noise that occurred at different times and places in history across Asian countries blend together in a single space to finally become a harmonious piece of music. 아시아 국가들의 최근 역사 속에서 국가 권력에 대항하여 자신들만의 목소리를 내고자 했던 민중들의 움직임은 번번이 가혹한 탄압과 인권 유린의 대상이 되었다. 군부 독재에 대항했던 대만에서의 “미려도 사건"은 39년간의 언론 탄압과 인권 유린으로 이어졌고, 광주에서는 “5.18 민주화 항쟁"의 그림자가 아직도 한국 역사에 깊이 드리워져 있다. 가장 자본주의적인 도시 홍콩에서 시민들의 목소리가 구석구석에 울려 퍼지던 2019년 여름, 아직도 전쟁의 상흔이 남아 있는 오키나와에서는 아시아 최대의 미군기지가 새로이 지어지고 있었다. 작가는 과거 정부로부터 부당한 대우를 받은 아시아 4곳의 도시에서 사람들을 만나 인터뷰하였다. 도시마다 두 명의 사람에게 1일 여행을 제안했고 그들과 함께 영상을 찍었다. 그들 중에는 기억 속에 상처를 안고 사는 사람도 있었고, 쉽게 잊혀 가는 과거의 사건들을 분노하며 살아가는 사람도 있었다. 가오슝, 기노완, 광주, 홍콩에서 찍은 4채널 비디오는 도시 전역에 걸쳐 화자의 기억을 따라 걸어가며 촬영된 인터뷰 영상이다. 작가는 각 도시에서 들을 수 있었던 각종 소음을 채집하고 녹음하였다. 각각의 비디오는 개별적인 다큐멘터인 동시에, 소음들로 이루어진 4중주의 한 구성원이 된다. “백색테러”는 과거 군사정권이 반대의 목소리를 탄압하는 수단이었다. 작가가 소음으로 이루어진 협주를 시도하려고 했던 이유는 “백색테러"의 한가운데 귀 기울이지 않으면 들리지 않았던 민중들의 목소리가 “백색소음"과 같다고 생각했기 때문이다. 아시아 각국에서 역사 속 다른 시기와 다른 장소에서 일어났던 “백색테러/소음"은 하나의 공간 속에서 어우러져 비로소 조화로운 음악이 된다.
