<Magician’s Walk> was proposed through a solo exhibition at the Art Tower Mito in Ibaraki Prefecture, Japan. This museum is located about 100 kilometers from the site of the Fukushima nuclear power plant accident that occurred after the Great East Japan Earthquake in 2011. Within this locational context, the museum asked the artist to create a work on the theme of “hope.” Jung reflected on the method of representing the disaster as an outsider who was not a direct victim of it, and instead focused on the life of Shiratori Kenji, a visually impaired massage therapist living his everyday life in the region. Closely following Kenji’s daily life, the artist unfolds the problem of large-scale disaster on the level of individual life. The “magician” appearing in the work is not a being who erases reality, but one who acts as a companion subtly transforming another person’s everyday life. Jung’s work carefully approaches the reality of disaster experienced by Japanese society from the position of a Korean artist, and prompts reflection on how empathy and solidarity with the suffering of others might be possible. 〈마술사와의 산책〉은 일본 이바라키현에 위치한 미토미술관의 개인전을 통해 제안받은 작품이다. 이 미술관은 2011년 동일본 대지진이 발생한 후쿠시마 원전 사고 지점에서 약 100 km 떨어진 곳에 위치해 있다. 이러한 장소적 맥락 속에서 미술관은 작가에게 ‘희망’을 주제로 한 작품을 요청했다. 정연두는 재난의 직접적 피해자가 아닌 외부자로서 참사를 재현하는 방식에 대해 고민했고, 대신 지역에서 일상을 살아가는 시각장애인 안마사 시라토리 켄지의 삶에 주목한다. 작가는 시라토리의 일상을 밀착해 따라가며 거대한 재난의 문제를 개인적 삶의 층위에서 풀어낸다. 작품에 등장하는 ‘마술사’는 현실을 지우는 존재가 아니라, 타인의 일상을 미묘하게 변화시키는 동행자로서의 역할을 한다. 정연두의 작품은 한국 작가로서 일본 사회가 경험한 재난의 현실에 조심스럽게 다가가며, 타자의 고통에 대한 공감과 연대가 어떻게 가능할 수 있는지를 사유하게 한다.
