"DMZ Theater" is a series of photographic installations that filmed DMZ observatories in 13 regions from Ganghwado to Goseong across different seasons, directing and capturing stories entangled with those DMZ areas, created in collaboration with director Surya. In 2017, when military tensions between South and North Korea were escalating, artist Yeondoo Jung began to photograph the nature around and the interiors of 13 observatories from the eastern to the western fronts, visiting the DMZ regions over 50 times across seasons to understand the true meaning of the DMZ. Noticing that the structures of DMZ observatories all resemble theaters, Jung involved theater director Surya in 2018 to compose and film scenes inspired by anecdotes and folklore surrounding the DMZ areas, which resulted in the birth of the photography series. In 2019, the two began pushing forward a multidisciplinary art project connecting exhibitions and performances to turn the scattered scenes into a single performance piece. In 2020, they formed "Surya x Yeondoo Jung" and presented a showcase of a multidisciplinary art performance structured around four scenes. Attitudes and mindsets toward the DMZ are always dominated by the powerful historical reality of division and war. Once environmental meanings such as ecology and nature are added to this, it seems as though there are no more stories left to be told about the DMZ. Surya x Yeondoo Jung wanted to break away from the standardized framework of treating the DMZ. To find clues, they listened closely to what could become human stories amidst the countless historical, political, and geographical information surrounding the DMZ. By connecting those small clues discovered with our lives in the present, they sought to add layers of living, breathing myths and narratives on top of the fixed image of the DMZ. By planting colorful images of myths and folklore into the DMZ space, and creating a path within it where our stories of the here and now can intermingle, they ultimately intend to prove that the boundary of the barbed-wire fence cannot become a boundary of imagination. <DMZ 극장>은 연출가 수르야와 협업으로 진행된 이 작품은 강화도부터 고성에 이르는 13개 지역의 DMZ 전망대를 계절별로 촬영하고, 그 DMZ 지역에 얽힌 이야기들을 연출하여 담은 사진 설치 연작 이다. 남북의 군사적 긴장이 고조되고 있던 2017년 작가 정연두는 비무장지대(DMZ)의 진정한 의미를 이해하기 위해 DMZ 지역을 계절별로 50여 차례 방문하며 동부전선부터 서부전선까지 13개 전망대 주변의 자연과 전망대 내부를 사진에 담기 시작했다. DMZ 전망대의 구조가 모두 극장과 유사하다는 것에 주목한 정연두는 2018년 연극연출가 수르야를 참여시켜 전망대를 둘러싼 DMZ 지역의 일화 및 설화에 착안한 장면을 구성하여 촬영하기 시작했고, 그 결과 DMZ 극장 사진 시리즈가 탄생하게 되었다. 2019년 두 사람은 흩어져 있는 장면들을 하나의 공연물로 만들고자 전시와 공연을 연결한 다원예술 프로젝트를 추진하기 시작했고, 2020년 수르야x정연두를 결성하여 4개 장면을 바탕으로 구성된 다원예술 공연의 쇼케이스를 선보였다. DMZ를 대하는 태도와 마음가짐은 언제나 분단과 전쟁이라는 강력한 역사적 현실의 지배를 받는다. 여기에 생태, 자연 등의 환경적 의미가 더해지고 나면 더 이상 DMZ에 대해 해볼 수 있는 이야기는 없는 것처럼 보인다. 수르야X정연두는 DMZ를 대하는 정형화된 틀에서 벗어나고 싶었고, 그 단서를 찾기 위해 DMZ를 둘러싼 수많은 역사적 정치적 지리적 정보들 사이에서 사람의 이야기가 될 수 있는 것에 귀를 기울였다. 그렇게 찾아낸 작은 단서들과 지금 현재를 살고 있는 우리의 삶을 연결해 고착화된 DMZ의 이미지 위에 살아 숨 쉬는 신화와 서사의 레이어를 덧붙여 보고자 했다. DMZ 공간에 신화와 설화의 다채로운 이미지를 심는 것, 그리고 그 안에 지금 여기 우리의 이야기가 뒤섞여 들어갈 수 있는 길을 만드는 것, 그리하여 철책의 경계가 상상의 경계가 될 수 없음을 증명하고자 한다.
