When rice grows in the wasteland and songs and dances blossom
A Soviet propaganda film made in 1945 features the “Avangard Kolkhoz,” the first collective farm established by Koreans who settled in the Kzyl-Orda region—a barren wilderness in northwestern Kazakhstan. Just as the name “Avangard” (Russian for “vanguard”) suggests, it embodies a tenacious determination to pioneer the forefront of agriculture in an extreme environment. Although the area was then nothing but salt-laden reed beds and sandy soil, they dug irrigation canals with their bare hands, channeled water from the Syr Darya River, and reclaimed the land. Applying the rice farming techniques they had honed since their days in Primorsky Krai, they transformed the barren wasteland of Central Asia—where rice seemed utterly impossible to grow—into a vast grain-producing region. This film features scenes of canals built to irrigate the desert, cattle drinking from the water, rice fields being harvested, and farmers gathering to wrestle. Above all, it includes rare footage of performances by members of the Goryeo Theater troupe, staged to entertain the farmers.
