Kim Jin's Lines as Lee Do-ryeong

I visited the grave of actor Kim Jin at the public cemetery in downtown Almaty. Along with actor Lee Ham-deok, who played the first-ever Chunhyang in 1962, he was the first person of Korean descent to receive the title of “People’s Actor”—the highest honor bestowed upon artists in the Republic of Kazakhstan. True to his reputation as a “specialist in the role of Lee Do-ryeong”—having played the first-ever Lee Do-ryeong at the Koryo Theater—his grave is inscribed with a line from *The Tale of Chunhyang*, each character carved into a white tile. It is the scene where Lee Do-ryeong meets Chunhyang one last time to bid her farewell before leaving for Hanyang with his family. It is a beautiful line that an actor departing for the afterlife could leave behind, and it also seems to reflect the feelings of an immigrant who has traveled far from home.

“If. I. go. away. Will. you. really. forget. me. after. I’ve. been. gone. for. so. long?”
