"Classic and New" is a 43 minute long, 3 channel video work commissioned by the Museum of Contemporary Art Tokyo, produced against the backdrop of the Koto-ku region in Tokyo. The work consists of three critical components that alternatively display the 'past', 'now', and 'storytelling' on three screens. The first is an interview with Mr. Wakebe, an 80 years old survivor of the Tokyo air raids during World War II. It contains his vivid memories of holding his sister's hand and fleeing into the ward office to survive while the entire village was burning from firebomb attacks, the fireflies he saw by the river when evacuating at night, his strict father who ensured the survival of all his children through the chaos, and how he sees himself growing to resemble that father. The second captures the 'now' through the activities of primary school children in Tokyo during their classes: an art class where they draw portraits of grandfathers and give presentations, a science class where they make soap bubbles, and a calligraphy class. The third features 'Rakugo', a traditional Japanese oral storytelling performance. Rakugo adds verbal twists and playful imagination to the piece, allowing the irony and satire of reality to approach the audience in an incredibly light language. The artist imagined three unrelated situations and a conversation between three people, attempting to approach history through serendipity. Through the generational differences in experience connected by past, present, and story, the artist seeks to depict the lingering gaze of a child within the memories of past war. 〈고전과 신작〉은 3채널 영상 작품으로, 도쿄도현대미술관의 커미션으로 제작되어 도쿄 강동구 지역을 배경으로 만들어졌다. 43분 길이의 이 작품은 '과거', '현재', '이야기'라는 중요한 3가지 구성으로 이루어져 화면에 교차로 상영된다. 첫 번째는 2차대전 당시 도쿄 대공습 때 생존한 80세 와케베 씨의 인터뷰이다. 어릴 적 소이탄 공격으로 온 마을이 불타고 있을 때 누이의 손을 잡고 도망을 가서 구청에 들어가 살아났던 이야기와 공습을 피해 밤에 피난 나와 강가에서 보았던 반딧불 이야기, 그리고 자식들을 모두 챙겨 난리 통에 살아남게 하신 엄한 아버지와 그 아버지를 닮아가는 자신에 대한 내용이 담겨있다. 두 번째는 지역 초등학교 어린이들의 수업에서 찍은 영상이다. 할아버지를 그린 아이들의 그림과 발표를 하는 미술 시간, 비눗방울 만들기를 하는 과학 시간, 그리고 서예 시간 등 수업 시간의 아이들을 영상에 담고 있다. 세 번째는 일본 전통의 이야기 공연인 ‘라쿠고’이다. 라쿠고는 언어의 반전과 유희적 상상력을 작품에 덧붙여 주는데, 이를 통해 현실 속의 비꼼과 풍자가 대단히 가벼운 언어로 다가오게 된다. 작가는 그다지 상관관계가 없는 세 가지 상황과 세 사람 간의 대화를 상상하며 우연성에 의한 역사에의 접근을 시도한다. 작가는 과거와 현재, 그리고 이야기로 이어주는 세대 간의 경험 차이를 통해 과거 전쟁 속에 마음속에 남아있는 어린이의 시선을 작품 속에 그리고자 하였다.
