〈Hanging Garden〉 is a fictional historical narrative. A professional TV announcer opens the red curtain on stage and begins telling the story of an ancient Korean hanging garden shrouded in mystery. He slowly crosses the stage, continuing his narration in a trustworthy tone. The background behind the narrator appears somewhat unrealistic, as if it were a blue screen composite. 〈Hanging Garden〉 was filmed on the rooftop of a building that once housed a secret Korean military agency, where countless victims of the former military regime were tortured. This site, now home to the National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Seoul, holds the dark history of the former military regime. The work suggests that real life exists somewhere between chaotic reality and fiction. The backdrop of Gyeongbokgung Palace behind the stage resembles the blue-screen scenery commonly seen in TV weather forecasts. As the narrator continuously opens the curtain in one direction to continue the story, crew members off-screen busily remove the wooden floorboards from the back and keep bringing them forward to set up this scene. An elaborate visual is constructed through a crude and ridiculous process. Viewers can see both the reality that the media constructs for its audience and the reality that exists behind the TV camera. The world we live in is made up of such irrational structures and the endless labor of invisible hands. 〈공중정원〉은 가상의 역사 이야기다. 전문 TV 아나운서가 무대 위의 붉은 커튼을 열면서, 비밀에 싸인 고대 한국의 공중정원에 대한 이야기를 시작한다. 그는 무대를 천천히 가로지르며 신뢰가 가는 어조로 말을 이어간다. 내레이터 뒤의 배경은 마치 그린 스크린을 합성한 것처럼 다소 비현실적으로 보인다. 〈공중정원〉은 과거 군사 정권의 수많은 희생자들이 고문을 당했던 한국 비밀 군사 기관 건물 옥상에서 촬영되었다. 현재 국립현대미술관 서울관이 위치한 이곳은 과거 군사 정권의 어두운 역사를 간직하고 있다. 이 작품은 혼란스러운 현실과 허구 사이에서 실제 삶이 존재함을 시사한다. 무대 뒤의 경복궁 풍경을 배경은 마치 TV 일기 예보에서 흔히 볼 수 있는 블루스크린 풍경과 닮아 있다. 끊임없이 한 쪽 방면으로 나레이터는 커튼을 열면서, 이야기를 이어나가는 이 장면을 구성하기 위해, 화면 밖 스탭들은 부지런히 뒤의 마루를 빼서 앞으로 계속 가져다 놓는다. 조악하고 어처구니 없는 과정을 통해 정교한 화면이 구축되는 것이다. 관람객은 미디어가 시청자를 위해 구성하는 현실과 TV 카메라 뒤에 존재하는 현실을 모두 볼 수 있다. 우리가 살고 있는 세상은 이러한 불합리한 구조와 보이지 않는 손들의 끝없는 노동으로 이루어져 있다.
