Borame Park used to be an air force academy base in Seoul. It became a park and the former hangar became a dance hall. In this work, romantic moments for middle-aged couples at Borame dance hall become a pattern on wallpaper filling the exhibition space. Borame, meaning ‘eagle’, is the symbol of the Korean Air Force. The Korean military government in the 1970s and 80s made it illegal to dance, as they saw it as an adulterous affair. The artist turned a gallery space into a dance floor full of dancing couples on the walls with music playing in the background. The dancing couples may seem outmoded if you see them as individual images, but overall, the space becomes a beautiful room in which you can overcome Korea’s recent modern history. 보라매 공원은 서울의 공군사관학교 있던 곳이다. 그곳이 공원이 되면서 격납고가 있던 곳은 댄스홀이 되었다. 보라매 댄스홀의 중년 커플의 로맨틱한 순간들은 전시 공간을 가득 채우는 벽지의 패턴으로 구현됐다. ‘독수리’라는 뜻의 보라매는 한국 공군의 상징이며, 70년대와 80년대 한국 군사정부는 춤추는 것을 간통행위로 보고 불법으로 만들었다. 작가는 갤러리 공간을 배경으로 연주하는 음악과 함께 벽에 춤추는 커플이 가득한 댄스 플로어로 바꾸었다. 춤추는 커플들을 개별적인 이미지로 본다면 구시대적인 것처럼 보일 수도 있지만, 전체적으로 보았을 때의 이 공간은 한국의 근대 역사를 극복할 수 있는 아름다운 방으로 보인다.
