In the museum’s high-ceilinged space, massive plant-like sculptures titled "Imaginary Song" hang suspended in the air. Visitors experience the sensation of walking beneath unfamiliar tropical plants. Red agave berries hang from the large leaves, and a low, resonant sound flows from them. It resembles the tolling of a church bell and fills the space like the deep, rumbling horn of a passenger ship. This horn-like resonance, which slowly spreads throughout the entire exhibition hall, symbolizes the act of setting out, migration, and crossing over. As you walk beneath them, at some point you hear a voice speaking an unfamiliar language brushing past your ears. Unlike the low-pitched sound that fills the space, this voice lingers only in the viewer’s ears, as if someone were speaking quietly right beside them. These whispers come from directional speakers installed inside the century plant berries. Unlike the sound that spreads widely, this voice is heard clearly only at specific points, drawing the viewer’s hearing into a personal realm. The languages heard are those of people of various nationalities living in Korea, sharing their experiences. Different languages, such as Arabic, Spanish, Indonesian, and others flow, intermingling with Korean. The sensation of these unfamiliar, hard-to-understand voices evokes the linguistic confusion and sense of alienation that Korean immigrants first encountered when they crossed over to the Yucatán Peninsula in the past. Before the meaning is understood, the texture of the sounds, the intonation, and the tremor of breath brush against the audience’s senses. In Mérida, Mexico, there is a street called “El Chemulpo.” The fact that the name of the port they left, repeated over and over in a foreign land, eventually became a place name demonstrates that language carries memory as it moves. The foreign languages in this work are not merely objects of translation but exist as sounds that encapsulate the time of crossing and staying. The large leaf-shaped pieces suspended in the air are made of soft sound-absorbing material. They absorb and accept the sounds dispersed throughout the space and control the reverberations. As a result, low-pitched sounds like a ship’s horn and whispers lingering in the ear overlap within a single space. As the expansive collective resonance intersects with the small voices that only reach individual ears, the audience finds themselves standing at the boundary between reality and imagination. In this way, "Imaginary Song" unfolds a soundscape of migration, memory, and the sensation of incomprehensibility through the reverberations that traverse the entire space and the unfamiliar languages that seep into each individual’s ears. The song of imagination may be heard from afar or whispered right beside you, and it is completed differently for each audience member in their own seat. 미술관의 높은 층고 공간에는 거대한 식물을 닮은 <상상곡> 조형물들이 공중에 매달려 있다. 관객은 마치 우리에게 익숙하지 않은 열대의 식물 아래를 거니는 듯한 감각을 경험한다. 커다란 이파리 사이로 붉은 백년초 열매가 달려 있고, 그 열매에서는 낮고 부피감 있는 소리가 흘러나온다. 그것은 교회의 종소리를 닮기도 하고, 저음 깊이 울리는 여객선의 뱃고동 소리처럼 공간을 채운다. 이 뱃고동 같은 울림은 어딘가로 떠나는 움직임, 이주와 건너감을 상징하며 전시장 전체에 천천히 번진다. 그 아래를 걷다 보면, 어느 순간 귓가를 스치는 낯선 언어의 목소리가 들린다. 그것은 공간을 가득 채우는 저음과 달리, 마치 바로 옆에서 누군가가 조용히 말을 거는 듯 관객의 귀에만 맴돈다. 이러한 속삭임은 백년초 열매 안에 설치된 초지향성 스피커에서 나온다. 넓게 퍼지는 소리와 달리, 이 목소리는 특정 지점에서만 또렷하게 들리며 관객의 청각을 개인적인 영역으로 끌어들인다. 들려오는 언어는 한국에 와서 살아가는 다양한 국적의 사람들이 자신의 경험을 이야기하는 목소리다. 아랍어, 스페인어, 인도네시아어 등 서로 다른 언어들이 한국어와 뒤섞여 흐른다. 이해하기 어려운 이 낯선 음성의 감각은, 과거 유카탄 반도로 건너갔던 한인 이주자들이 처음 마주했을 언어적 혼란과 이질감을 환기한다. 의미를 알아듣기 이전에 먼저 다가오는 음의 결, 억양, 숨결의 떨림이 관객의 감각을 스친다. 멕시코 메리다에는 ‘엘 제물포(El Chemulpo)’라는 길이 있다. 낯선 땅에서 반복해 불렸던 떠나온 항구의 이름이 결국 지명이 되었다는 사실은, 언어가 기억을 품고 이동한다는 것을 보여준다. 이 작품에서의 외국어 역시 단순한 번역의 대상이 아니라, 건너감과 머묾의 시간을 담은 소리로 존재한다. 공중에 매달린 커다란 이파리 조각은 부드러운 흡음재로 만들어져 있다. 그것들은 공간에서 흩어지는 소리를 빨아들이고 받아들이며 울림을 조절한다. 그 결과, 뱃고동 같은 저음과 귓가에 맴도는 속삭임이 한 공간 안에서 겹쳐진다. 넓게 퍼지는 집단적 울림과 개인의 귀에만 닿는 작은 목소리가 교차하면서, 관객은 실제와 상상 사이의 경계에 서게 된다. <상상곡>은 그렇게 공간 전체를 가로지르는 울림과 개인의 귀에 스미는 낯선 언어를 통해, 이주와 기억, 그리고 이해할 수 없음의 감각을 청각적 풍경으로 펼쳐 보인다. 상상의 노래는 멀리서 들려오기도 하고, 바로 옆에서 속삭이기도 하며, 관객 각자의 자리에서 다르게 완성된다.
